Surgical Services
Surgical Services: A wide range of surgical specialities are offered by our medical
staff including general surgery, ENT, gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology and
urology. Surgical procedures are done on both and inpatient and outpatient basis. Four
operating rooms, surgical crew and anesthesia staff are available 24 hours a day.
Because of the wide range of surgical specialties represented on the medical staff, the
surgical department is equipped to perform many surgical procedures including total
knee and hip-joint replacement, cataract extractions and intra-ocular lens implants,
various laparascopic procedures, antroscopic surgery, insertion of cardiac pacemakers,
microsurery of the inner ear, gynecology, podiatry, urologic surgery and laser
procedures.
The MMC Perioperative Services Unit is designed to be user friendly for patients,
family and staff. Perioperative services includes preadmissions , pre-op and intra-op
care, Phase I and Phase II recovery, endoscopy services and infusion therapy. All areas
of Perioperative services are staffed by an extremely experienced group of staff that
include RNs, LPNs, Operating Room Technicians, and Nursing Assistants.
Preadmissions: Preadmissions helps prepare patients for surgery or other special
procedures. During an appointment with the preadmissions nurse, all pre-operative
laboratory tests, radiology exams, and other diagnostics evaluations will be completed
and the admission process will be initiated. By working closely with the physicians the
preadmissions nurse helps to assure the patient is in an optimal state of health to
proceed with surgery. All surgical patients are called the night before for admission time
and other instructions. The nurse will also give instructions on how to prepare for
surgery.
Endoscopy: Endoscopy is a medical procedure performed by your physician to explore
the inside of an organ or body cavity for diagnostic or screening purposes. The
endoscope is a long, flexible tube which projects live images onto a screen. Tiny glass
fibers within the tube transmit light around curves, enabling the physician to see the
structures of the lower gastrointestinal tract or stomach. MMC's endoscopy lab offers two
suites with capabilities to perform flexible fiber optic sigmoidoscopies (FFS),
colonoscopies, esophagogastroduodenoscopies (EGD), endoscopic retrograde
cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and gastric pH monitoring.
Recovery: Patients who have had anesthesia or sedation are monitored in our
Phase I recovery area. This area provides close monitoring for patients and is often
called the Recovery Room. Phase II recovery occurs in the Outpatient area that has 17
private rooms. Here the patient is prepared for discharge.
Infusion Therapy/Oncology Perioperative Services: also provides nursing care for
patients receiving infusion therapy, blood products and chemotherapy.
